Preparation for sputum sample delivery:
Sputum analysis requires specific preparation, otherwise there may be a chance of obtaining an inaccurate result.
Collecting sputum:
- It is preferable to collect sputum for analysis in the morning on an empty stomach during a coughing episode in a special medical container with a wide opening and a screw cap.
- To avoid adding mouth content to the sputum, you must clean your mouth before coughing – brushing teeth, rinsing mouth and throat with pre-boiled water.
- If it is difficult to separate the sputum, it is preferable to take expectorants and drink warm water before sleeping. Sputum is collected during a deep cough.
Preparation and sputum collection technique:
- After cleaning the mouth, it is preferable to sit on a chair in front of an open window.
- Take 2 deep breaths and exhale.
- On the third breath, stand up from the chair to fill the lungs with air, then push forcefully and sharply to expel air from the lungs, causing the diaphragm to contract and a natural cough to occur.
- The patient should cough to get rid of the sputum and swallow saliva in a special plastic medical container, then tightly close it with a screw cap.
Sample storage conditions at home and delivery to the laboratory:
- The sample should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible, but not exceeding one hour from collection.
- The medical sample container should be stored in a cool, dark place.
